Camp farther from home
What limits how far out you camp?
Camp farther from home: fuel range. Where do I start?
Your range on a loaded trip is shorter than on the highway. Find your number before you buy extra fuel storage. Try first, no parts: Fill up at the last station: Top off before you leave pavement, even if you are half full.; Track a real trip: Note miles and gallons on your next loaded trip to learn your truck.. Simple upgrades: Work out your range: See how far you go on a tank with your load.; Add jerry cans: See how much range each can adds.. Bigger changes: Long range tank: Compare a bigger tank with cans on the Fuel page.. Still to check: Payload left with full cans, on the build sheet, Where the cans mount.
Camp farther from home: keeping the fridge and lights going. Where do I start?
A fridge is usually the biggest draw. Work out how many days you want off-grid, then pick the battery and solar to match. Try first, no parts: Pre-cool the fridge at home: Start it cold on house power so the battery isn’t doing the hard part.; Park in the shade: A cooler fridge cycles less often.. Simple upgrades: Work out your days off-grid: See how long your battery and fridge last.; Add solar: See how much a panel stretches your days.. Bigger changes: Plan a power system: The guided path covers battery, charging and solar.. Still to check: Your fridge’s actual draw, How many days you camp without driving.
Camp farther from home: a good place to sleep. Where do I start?
A rooftop tent has to fit your roof and rack ratings. Sleeping in the truck or a good ground tent may suit you just as well. Check the maker’s rating too.. Bigger changes: Find the right rooftop tent: A guided path to a tent your truck can carry.. Still to check: Your roof and rack ratings from the maker, Whether the truck still fits your garage.
Camp farther from home: water and storage. Where do I start?
None of our tools cover water storage yet. Plan simple and count the weight on your build sheet. Try first, no parts: Carry more water than you think: Bring extra for drinking, cooking and an emergency.; Split it into containers: A leak or a cracked jug won’t cost you all of it.; Keep heavy things low: Water is heavy. Store it low and forward, and tie it down.. Simple upgrades: Count the weight: Add water and gear to your build sheet to see payload left.. Bigger changes: Use the roof for light gear: Free up space inside. Check the roof ratings first.. Still to check: Payload left with water aboard, How long you plan to be out.
